After more than three months, the 2014 Czech That Film festival reaches its final destination. The touring series of Czech films will be presented during the month of July in Chicago. The screening of both classic and modern Czech films takes place at Gene Siskel Film Center (164 N. State Street, Chicago, IL 60601).

Besides films included in the Czech That Film festival ( Lousy Bastards – July 13 at 3 pm & July 14 at 6 pm, Colette – July 13 at 5 pm, July 16 at 7:45 pm, Don Juans – July 20 at 3pm & July 23 at 6 pm, Like Never Before – July 20 at 5pm & July 21 at 6pm, Honeymoon – July 27 at 3 pm & July 30 at 6pm), the program will be highlighted with the Czech archival classic Markéta Lazarová by František Vláčil (July 6 at 2:30 pm & July 9 at 6:30 pm) and Kawasaki Rose by Academy nominee director Jan Hřebejk (July 27 at 5 pm & July 28 at 6 pm).

Selection of influential and emerging voices in Czech cinema will be newly presented in Dallas, Texas, in a conjunction with the film series Czech That Film , touring the United States this spring.

Film enthusiasts in Dallas will have an opportunity to appreciate on Friday, June 27th at 5:30 pm at the at the Center for Spiritual Living (4801 Spring Valley Rd. St. 115, Dallas, 75244), the newest feature from Academy Award winning director Jiří Menzel Don Juans ( Donšajni , 2013). This brilliant combination and proper dosage of comedy and drama, opera and cinema was the official selection of the Czech Republic for the 86th Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film category. Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles Michal Sedláček will be present at the screening. The Honeymoon ( Líbánky , 2013) ends faster than expected for a Czech couple when past secrets come to light in Jan Hrebejk’s tense new feature. The psychological drama Honeymoon by Oscar nominated director Jan Hřebejk will be presented on Saturday, June 28th at 7 pm at the University of North Texas College of Music (415 Avenue C, Recital Hall, Room 301, Denton, TX 76201). Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles Mr. Michal Sedláček, who is also an organizer of the Czech That Film series, will be a guest of the screening. The festival in Dallas was organized by Czech School of Dallas. Tickets (early bird 5 USD, general admission 6 USD) are available at EVENTBRITE.COM. Small refreshments will be served after each screening.

Film series of current Czech cinema continues to travel on its 2014 tour. Tentatively tailored program of the best new Czech features of numerous genres will further showcase in Portland (June 12-15, 2014) Seattle (July 11-13, 2014) and Chicago (July 6-30, 2014). Also, the festival will newly reach Dallas, Texas (June 27-28, 2014).

The Northwest Film Center in Portland will present Czech That Film program at the Whitsell Auditorium Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park Avenue, Portland, OR 97205) in June 12-15, 2014. A celebrated Czech actor Jiří Mádl will introduce in person the opening film of the festival Lousy Bastards ( Všiváci , 2013) (Thursday, June 12 at 7 pm) and will be available for Q&A session to discuss the presented feature at which he starred in one of the supporting roles. Mr. Mádl will further disclose background of creation of the feature Colette (2013) in which he portrayed a leading part. The breathtaking story of a man and his vigorous determination to escape hopelessness will be screened on Saturday, June 14th at 4:30 pm in Portland.

As a special treat there will be a screening of a family film Kooky (2010) (June 14th at 2 pm) by the Oscar-winning director Jan Svěrák. The event is co-organized by the Czech School of Portland. Furthermore, the series will present Honeymoon ( Líbánky , 2013) by Jan Hřebejk for which he won the best director award at the IFF in Karlovy Vary (June 13th at 7 pm), the psychological drama by Zdeněk Tyc Like Never Before ( Jako Nikdy , 2013) (June 14th at 7:30 pm) and Jiří Menzel’s Don Juans ( Donšajni , 2013), the Czech entry for the 86th Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film category, (June 15th at 4:30 pm). All films are with English subtitles.

While 2014 is Czech That Film ’s third year traveling across the United States, this year marked the first time the festival was held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Cedar Rapids festival, held on April 4 and 5, was arranged by the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in partnership with Collins Road Theatres. The opening evening was well-attended by cinema fans from across Eastern Iowa, and included the presence of talented Czech filmmaker Roman Kašparovský. The audience experienced Roman’s debut film, Lousy Bastards, which was followed by a Q&A session with the director. Those who had the opportunity to see Lousy Bastards ( Všiváci , 2013) were blown away by its quality and artfulness, and were enthralled by Roman’s post-film discussion. Afterward, a reception was held in honor of the director at Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano.


The remainder of the featured films were shown on Saturday, April 5 to enthusiastic moviegoers. All remarks were very positive, and the 2015 festival is already highly anticipated. The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, along with Collins Road Theatres, is thrilled to have been a part of Czech That Film this year.

The annual Czech film festival Czech That Film continues its US tour in Phoenix. A special sold-out showcase screening of Lousy Bastards ( Všiváci , 2013) at the Phoenix International Film Festival kicked off the Arizona leg of the festival on Monday, April 7th, 2014 in Scottsdale. The opening night featured a special guest, the promising young Czech director Roman Kašparovský. He participated in Q&A session after screening of his film which held its world-premiere in Los Angeles just a few days earlier.


The Czech That Film festival in Phoenix will continue in coming weeks at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix (815 N Street). The series will present Jiří Menzel’s Don Juans ( Donšajni , 2013), the Czech entry for the 86th Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film category, (April 26th at 2 pm and April 29th at 7 pm), Honeymoon ( Líbánky , 2013) by Jan Hřebejk for which he won the best director award at the IFF in Karlovy Vary (May 3rd at 2 pm and May 6th at 7 pm) and psychological drama by Zdeněk Tyc Like Never Before ( Jako Nikdy , 2013) (May 10th at 2 pm and May 13th at 7 pm).

This year, the festival has been exceeding all expectations. It has had an incredible turnout in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City, also several sreenings in Denver and in Cedar Rapids were sold-out.

Czech That Film festival in 2014 is exceeding all expectations. It has had an incredible turnout in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City each day so far. In order to accommodate all attendees at the Opening night of the festival in Los Angeles, an additional screening room had to be opened at the University of Southern California.


As a special treat to all three cities, the well-known Czech director Jan Hřebejk presented in person his latest film Honeymoon ( Líbánky , 2013) during Opening nights. During the following Q&A session, he explained development of his characters and his creative process during the shooting. Popular receptions attended by local VIPs as well as film lovers of all ages attracted large crowds willing to taste free Czech Pilsner Urquell and to discuss with Jan Hrebejk his masterpiece.

World premiere of modern Czech feature Lousy Bastard ( Všiváci , 2014) with promising Czech director Roman Kašparovský on stage at USC successfully concluded the festival in Los Angeles and in San Francisco on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014. Sold-out screening of Collette (2013), a dramatic love story from Auschwitz based on the novel by Pulitzer Prize nominee Arnošt Lusting, closed the Salt Lake City leg of the festival.

On Friday April 4th, the festival continues in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with screening of Lousy Bastards and on Saturday April 5th the festival opens in Denver with Honeymoon and Jan Hřebejk in person. Other screenings throughout the festival include Jiří Menzel’s Don Juans ( Donšajni , 2013), the Czech entry for the 86th Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film category, and psychological drama by Zdeněk Tyc Like Never Before ( Jako Nikdy , 2013) Czech director Roman Kašparovský will present in person his Lousy Bastards in Phoenix on Monday, April 7th as a special showcase at the Phoenix International Film Festival.

The opening night of Czech That Film in San Francisco surpassed all expectations. The exciting touring program of current Czech films drew large audience on Sunday, March 30, 2014 to check out Honeymoon ( Líbánky , 2013), the newest feature of the Oscar nominated director Jan Hřebejk. The legendary Czech director was available in person for post-screening Q&A session that lasted half an hour. The screening was followed by an after-party that was held in local restaurant.

The festival continues on Tuesday, April 1 at 7 pm with a breathtaking love story from Auschwitz Collette (2013) based on the novel by one of the world’s most renowned literary authors Arnošt Lustig. This screening is supported by AJC San Francisco.

The San Francisco’s offshoot of the film series will conclude on Wednesday, April 2 at 7 pm with a Roman Kašparovský feature debut Lousy Bastards ( Všiváci , 2013).

The fest then travels to Salt Lake City, where it solemnly starts on Tuesday, April 1st with the opening film of the festival Honeymoon .

The festival will conclude on Wednesday, April 2nd with the world premiere of Lousy Bastards ( Všiváci , 2013), the debut feature by Roman Kašparovský, who will be available for Q&A session.

Czech That Film festival, which successfully kicked off its 2014 showing on March 27th with a sold out house featuring the newest film of Academy nominee director Jan Hřebejk Honeymoon ( Líbánky , 2013) continues in Los Angeles through April 2nd, 2014 with other great hits. On Tuesday, April 1st, 2014 at 7 pm at the Ray Stark Theater at the USC campus will be showing a breathtaking love story from Auschwitz Collette based on the novel by one of the world’s most renowned literary authors Arnošt Lustig.

I was not interested in making a shocking document on the holocaust. Rather, I wanted to pull the spectators into the world of lovers in cruel times and carry them through the story's big dramatic curve to its catharsis. I wanted to capture on film the feeling I had in reading the novel—the depth of emotion and the tension of a classic thriller drama.

One of the highlights of the festival is the visit of a special guest - promising Czech director Roman Kašparovský, who will present at the closing night of the festival on Wednesday, April 2nd at 7 pm at Ray Stark Theater a world premiere of his feature debut Lousy Bastards .

Admission to all screenings is complimentary. The festival takes place at the campus of the University of Southern California, who is festival’s partner in 2014. The fest then travels to Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, Seattle, Denver, Portland, Salt Lake City, and Cedar Rapids.

The Opening Night of the third edition of popular Czech film touring series titled Czech That Film exceeded all expections. The Oscar nominated director Jan Hřebejk in person introduced to a sold-out Ray Stark Family Theater at USC his newest feature Honeymoon ( Líbánky , 2013) on Thursday, March 27, 2014. The legendary Czech director also participated in the post-screening Q&A session during which he mainly disucssed development of his characters and his creative process. To accomodate all the lovers of Czech cinema, additional screening room had to be opened and utilized.

An after-party followed the screening at the grounds of USC and was heavily attended by fans of Czech moviemaking of all ages, film professionals, and students of USC. Several Consul Generals from LA Consular Corp and Czech and Slovak expatriates also visited start of this week-long series of best what current Czech cinema has to offer.

The Czech That Film festival continues today, on Friday, March 28 at 7 pm with a screening of the latest feature of the Oscar winning director Jiří Menzel Don Juans ( Donšajni , 2013), the Czech entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards. Psychological drama directed by Zdeněk Tyc Like Never Before ( Jako nikdy , 2013) starring acclaimed actors Jiří Schmitzer, Taťjana Medvecká and Petra Špálková will be featured on Saturday, March 29th at 7 pm.

The fest will run in Los Angeles through April 2nd, 2014. All the LA screenings take entirely place at the campus of the University of Southern California, are with English subtitles, and are complimentary but reservations are required at cinema.usc.edu

The program for the festival started in New York City and continued to Los Angeles. It was a part of the New Czech Films touring series that made the circuit with Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and Chicago. The event grew as interest in Czech cinema and culture increased. Modern feature films, as well as established classics, were screened with question and answer sessions with directors, lively concerts with musical cast, and other special events.

After a successful inaugural year of the Czech Film Festival in 2012, its second edition surpassed all expectations. The next touring program of Czech films under the festival’s new name Czech That Film presented by Staropramen drew large audiences to check out recent Czech cinema all over the United States from April to July, 2013. The series traveled through eleven major U.S. cities with significant Czech communities. The festive program contained a wide selection of features that vividly illustrated the breadth and excellence of Czech Cinema.

Additional special events complemented the festival in each city such as Q&A sessions with well-established Czech directors. Attendees had an opportunity to personally meet with David Ondříček ( In the Shadow), who was recently listed by Variety magazine as one of the Top 10 Directors to Watch, and Zdenek Jiráský, who presented his award-winningFlower Buds which kicked-off the program in a majority of the cities.

Czech That Film presented by Staropramen — A Great Success

In conclusion…

After a successful inaugural year of the Czech film festival in 2012, its second edition surpassed all expectations. The exciting touring program of recent Czech films under the festival’s new name “Czech That Film presented by Staropramen” drew large audiences to check out recent Czech cinema all over the United States. The second edition of Czech film touring series took place in the United States from April to July, 2013. The series traveled through eleven major U.S. cities with significant Czech communities such as New York City, Chicago, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The festive program was a wide selection of features that vividly illustrated the breadth and excellence of Czech Cinema, including “In the Shadow” (Ve stínu, 2012), winner of nine Czech Lions, and “Flower Buds” (Poupata, 2011), the best Czech film of 2011.

Additional special events complemented the festival in each city such as opening and closing receptions and Q&A sessions with well-established Czech directors. Attendees had an opportunity to personally meet with David Ondricek (“In the Shadow”), who was recently listed by Variety magazine as one of the Top 10 Directors to Watch, and Zdenek Jirasky, who presented his recipient of the 2011 Czech Lion for Best Film, “Flower Buds”, which kick-off the program in majority of the cities.

Czech That Film festival starts in Seattle on Friday

Czech That Film presented by Staropramen, a series of the best recent Czech films, will reach its last destination - Seattle this Friday which will conclude the second annual Czech That Film festival. From July 12 till July 14, 2013 the Seattle’s audience will have an unique opportunity to experience a diverse sampling of the best of recent Czech cinema. In Seattle, the festival will officially kick off on Friday, July 12 at 6:30 p.m. with a romantic comedy by renowned director Alice Nellis, “Perfect Days“ (I ženy mají své dny, 2011, 108 minutes) in SIFF Cinema Uptown (511 Queen Anne Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109). On Saturday, July 13, will feature three successful films starting at 2:00 p.m. with a propulsive thriller by legendary Czech director Jan Hrebejk „Innocence“ (Nevinnost, 2011, 98 minutes), followed by Slovak entry for the 2012 Best Foreign Language Oscar „Made in Ash“ (Až do města Aš, 2012, 84 minutes) at 4:30 p.m. The Saturday’s program will conclude with showing of coming of age story „Don’t Stop“ (2012, 97 minutes). The program on Sunday, July 14 will start at 2:00 p.m. with a winner of the 2012 European Film Award for best Animated Feature Film and the Czech entry for 2012 Best Foreign Language Oscar, „Alois Nebel (2011, 84 minutes), followed by: „The House“ (Dům, 2011, 100 minutes) at 4:00 p.m. As the closing film of the festival was selected the Slovak entry for the 2011 Academy Awards „Gypsy“ (Cikan, 2011, 100 minutes). Annual Czech That Film festival presented by Staropramen continues in a full swing. After fantastic closing nights with packed screenings in Los Angeles on Monday, June 3 and in San Francisco on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, the fest will continue in Portland and Chicago this weekend.

The Opening Night Gala at Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97205) organized by the Northwest Film Forum will take place on Thursday, June 6 at 7pm. Screening of the Czech film “In The Shadow” will be followed by a reception. In Chicago, the festival will start on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Gene Siskel Film Center (164 N. State Street, Chicago, IL 60601). Both Opening nights will feature director David Ondricek, who was recently listed by Variety magazine as one of the “Top 10 directors to Watch” in 2013 and will be available for Q&A sessions in both cities.

“In the Shadow” is a stylish and haunting crime and political drama that uses a film noir look and feel. The film was the Czech Republic’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscars last year and won unprecedented 9 Czech Lions this past March. Do not miss this remarkable film!

Czech That Film festival presented by Staropramen continues its tour around the United States this week. The festival will kicked off its next leg in Denver and Washington D.C. at the same day on May 29, 2013. Two days later, on May 31, the festival will begin in San Francisco.

While the Opening Night feature in Washington was „In the Shadow“ at the West End Cinema (2301 M Street, NW, Washington, DC 20037) by celebrated director David Ondříček, in Denver the festival started with mesmerizing black and white rotoscope animation “Alois Nebel” by Tomáš Luňák at Sie Film Center (2510 East Colfax Avenue, Denver, CO 80206). The San Francisco will open the festival at Roxie (3117 16th Street, San Francisco, CA) on Friday, May 31 at 6:30 pm with “Flower Buds” by Zdeněk Jiráský, that collected four Czech Lions in 2011 including Best Film and Best Director.

Director David Ondříček, who was recently listed by Variety magazine as one of the Top "10 Directors to Watch“, was in person for Q&A session in Washington D.C. following the screening on Wednesday (May 29). Czech That Film successfully kicked off in Los Angeles

Award-winning drama “Flower Buds” (Poupata) successfully kicked off the second year of a touring festival of recent Czech films called: “Czech That Film presented by Staropramen” on Friday, May 10, 2013 in Los Angeles. More than 250 film enthusiasts came to Billy Wilder Theater in Hammer Museum to check out the best Czech film of 2011 and winner of 4 Czech Lions. Flower Bud’s director Zdeněk Jiráský participated in post screening Q&A’s which lasted more than half an hour.

Opening night VIP reception at the Italian Cultural Institute was attended by fans of international cinema and many film industry professionals from Hollywood, including numerous Academy members. Several Consul Generals from LA Consular Corp and a Czech and Slovak expatriates also visited the start of this month-long series of best what recent Czech cinema has to offer. The event concluded with after party heavily attended by film lovers of all ages and students of UCLA.

The Slovak Night was also a big hit on Saturday, May 11 with screenings of Czech and Slovak coproductions “Gypsy“ (Cikán), directed by Martin Šulík, and “Made in Ash“ (Až do města Aš), directed by Iveta Grófová. Both films were nominated as the Slovak entries for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscars in 2011 and 2012.

The Czech That Film festival continues with a Comedy Night with a doublefeature of two popular comedies on Thursday, May 16, 2013. All screenings take place at the Billy Wilder Theater in Westwood (10899 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles). All films are with English subtitles and shows start at 7:30pm.

  • Thursday, May 16 — Polski Film followed by Signal (double feature)
  • Monday, May 20 — The House
  • Monday, June 3 — In the Shadow (followed by Q&A with Ondříček)

The festival will conclude with a screening of “In the Shadow,” stylish and haunting crime and political drama that uses a film noir look and feel by the director David Ondříček on June 3, 2013. This film was the Czech Republic’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscars last year and won unprecedented 9 Czech Lions this past March. David Ondříček, son of Oscar-winning cinematographer Miroslav Ondříček (“Amadeus”), will be in person at the Wilder Theater available for a Q&A following the screening of his film.

Annual Czech film festival officially was launched under its new name Czech That Film presented by Staropramen on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 in Salt Lake City with the VIP Opening Night Reception at Broadway Center Cinemas. The opening night featured a special guest, the highly acclaimed Czech director Zdeněk Jiráský, who held Q&A session after the screening of his film Flower Buds (Poupata), winner of four Czech Lions, and attracted large crowd of film enthusiasts.

All screened films are with English subtitles.

The festival in SLC continues on April 25, 2013 with screening of following movies: Perfect Days (noon), Alois Nebel (4:00pm), House (7:00pm) and Innocence (9:30pm).

A touring festival of current Czech cinema will further travel to the following destinations: Phoenix (May 2-5, 2013), Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Denver, San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, New York City a Seattle.

The VIP Opening Night Reception kicked off the Arizona leg of the festival on Thursday, May 2, 2013 in Scottsdale. The opening night featured a special guest, the highly acclaimed Czech director Zdeněk Jiráský, who held Q&A session after screening of his film Flower Buds (Poupata), winner of four Czech Lions, and attracted a large crowd of film enthusiasts.

The festival is held in Phoenix at the Harkins Theaters over the weekend on May 3 – 5, 2013 with screening of following movies: Gypsy (5/3 at 1pm, 5/4 at 3:30 pm), Perfect Days (5/3 at 3:30pm and 5/5 1 pm), Alois Nebel (5/3 at 6 pm, 5/5 at 3:30pm), Made In Ash (5/4, 1 pm.) and Men In Hope (5/5 6 pm).

All screened films are with English subtitles.
