Czech That Film is coming back to Salt Lake City and Denver! After a year of waiting, we are delighted to present the touring display of the best current Czech features in the Mountain West!

At its fourth stop of the 2015 in Salt Lake City, the festival will present five movies starting on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 and in Denver from Thursday, May 7 till Sunday, May 10, 2015. In Salt Lake City, the festival is being held at the Broadway Centre Cinemas (111 E Broadway, Salt Lake City, UT 84111), and in Denver, the fest takes place at the Sie Film Center Center (2510 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80206).

Kicking off the festival in both destinations will be Andrea Sedláčková and her latest piece “Fair Play”. The movie was selected to represent the Czech Republic at the 87th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The great experience of the film will be underlined by a Q&A session with Ms. Sedláčková personally!

The moviegoers can further experience such film hits as “Clownwise” (“Klauni”), “Krásno”, “Icing” (“Zakázané uvolnění”) and “To See the Sea” (“Pojedeme k moři” - in Denver only). The films represent a colorful spectrum of pieces made by the young Czech talent. Do not miss this presentation of the best current Czech movies in the USA! English subtitles included!

Although there is only one last screening ahead of us, Los Angeles was just the first stop of this year’s touring display. Yet, there is still a chance to say goodbye to the festival on Tuesday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. Come and enjoy the bittersweet and not that typical comedy “Icing” (“Zakázané uvolnění”, 2014). Jan Hřebejk’s last feature tells an unusual story of one wedding, a remote village bar and an ice hockey match. The film, based on the theatre play by Petr Kolečko, is for sure a great farewell to the festival in Los Angeles. As the end in closer, we are definitely starting to look forward to kick off in 2016 again!

However, the festival is still not over! After Los Angeles, the festival successfully kicked off in San Francisco. Yet much more stops are still waiting! We are truly glad that the festival has found during its 4 years a lot of fans and can continue across the US. As the next stop of the touring display, there are waiting three screening throughout April in Phoenix. Afterwards, the festival will continue during the whole May and June in cities such as Salt Lake City, Denver, Portland, Washington, Cleveland, Houston, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Chicago, Little Rock, New York City, Minneapolis, Cedar Rapids and Seattle.

All the Czech That Film fans are cordially invited to join our festival in Phoenix! We can not wait to take off our festival on its third stop this April. Throughout the whole month, you can catch screenings of three successful Czech features of 2014, including “To See the Sea” (“Pojedeme k moři”), “Fair Play” (“Fair Play”) and “Icing” (“Zakázané uvolněni”). The screenings will take place in Film Bar (815 n. 2th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004) and all of them will include English subtitles!

The festival will be launched on Saturday, April 11 at 3 p.m. You can enjoy a directorial debut of famous Czech actor Jiří Mádl “To See The Sea” (“Pojedeme k moři”), which has been a delightful surprise for all filmgoers and film critics. In the original story of 11-year-old Tomáš (Petr Šimčák), whose biggest dream is to become a well-known film director, we can see the perfect combination of two worlds: kids and adults.

The next part of the festival is a controversial “Fair Play” (“Fair Play”) on Saturday, April 18 at 3 p.m. A young athlete Anna (Judit Bárdos) gets stuck into a moral dilemma: whether to join the state-controlled doping program or try to play fair. The story is accompanied by psychical pressure of Anna’s mother (Anna Geislerová) and her trainer (Roman Luknár), whose acting is just stunning. The film was selected to represent the Czech Republic in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 87th Academy Awards!

As the last screening, Jan Hřebejk’s “Icing” (“Zakázané uvolnění”) will be presented on Saturday, April 25 at 3 p.m. Come and enjoy not that typical comedy, based on the successful theatre play by Petr Kolečko, describing a story of one wedding, a remote village bar and ice-hockey championship.

After a long year of waiting, Czech That Film 2015 finally kicked off its fourth year in Los Angeles! On Friday, March 27, we were honored to welcome at the Norris Cinema Theatre another great number of current Czech cinema fans.

Once The Consul General of the Czech Republic Michal Sedláček cordially welcomed all the guests, Mr. Alex Ago of the USC was our host throughout the evening. This year of the festival was launched by a successful piece of 2014 – a controversial drama “Fair Play”. Its director Andrea Sedláčková, who was personally introduced as a significant part of the festival, said a few words about the movie and gladly answered every curious question of the attendees during the Q&A session that followed the screening. Amazing atmosphere of the opening night was concluded by a pleasant reception where delicious Czech beer was offered.

Hopefully this experience will stay in your minds at least for another year and you will not miss Czech That Film 2016! The festival continues in Los Angeles till Monday, March 31. For those who were have not been able to make in LA, there is still a chance! Andrea Sedláčková, the director of controversial drama “Fair Play” (2014), is currently in California to personally present her movie during touring of the 2015 Czech That Film festival. She will attend screening in Los Angeles and San Francisco this weekend.

The story of “Fair Play” captures personal drama of a young athlete Anna (Judit Bárdos) alongside with moral dilemma. The movie transmits us to Czechoslovakia of the 80’s and uncovers a topic of state-controlled doping, considered more or less as a public secret. Among many other achievements, “Fair Play” was selected by the to represent the Czech Republic in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 87th Academy Awards.

We are truly honored that as a part of the Opening Night of the Czech That Film festival in Los Angeles, Andrea Sedláčková will present “Fair Play” on March 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the USC Norris Cinema Theatre (3507 Trousdale Parkway, Los Angeles, CA 90007).

Andrea’s next stop will be San Francisco, where “Fair Play” will be presented on Saturday, March 28 at 5:00 p.m. at the Roxie Theatre (3117 16th Street, San Francisco, CA 94103).

Both of these special screenings will be followed by the Q&A sessions with the director.

Andrea Sedláčková, who studied screenwriting and dramaturgy at Prague’s Film Academy (1986-89) and editing and directing at prestigious La Fémis in Paris (1990-93), belongs to the most established and successful Czech directors and screenwriters. Her directing work features a wide range of film genres such as documentaries (“Life According to Václav Havel”, 2014; “What Did You Do in November”, 1994), TV series (“Bachelors”, 1997) and features (“Fair Play”, 2014; “Victims and Murderers”, 2000). As an editor, Andrea was nominated for the César Award for her work on the French movie “Welcome”(2009).
